In its free time from controversy surrounding the issue of falsifying the results of tests on the amount of harmful emissions into the atmosphere, the Volkswagen Group, based in Germany, is open to quite interesting projects in the field of 3D printing. The automotive giant has long been a supporter of the introduction of additive technologies in the automotive industry. In fact, VW has 14 production facilities in 9 countries and places a significant emphasis on the use of 3D printing with metals.

Indeed, Audi Toolmaking, part of the VW Group, recently created a copy of the Silver Arrow Type C of the 1936 year of the legendary Auto Union team of the year on a 1: 2 scale, the classic Silver Arrow model of the pre-war years. The replica of the car was made by selective laser sintering.

“We at Audi Toolmaking and the Volkswagen Group are advancing with new manufacturing technologies,” says Dr. Hubert Waltl, Board Member for Volkswagen, responsible for manufacturing. “Together with research partners, we are constantly exploring the potential of new processes. One of our goals is to introduce metal 3d printers into mass production. ”

Audi Toolmaking was able to print Type C in parts up to 240 mm in length and 200 mm in height, while the particle size modulus of the metal powder was only 0.015-0.04 mm, which allowed for 3D printing of complex products with a low surface roughness. The VW Group and Audi Toolmaking received a replica that externally and in terms of its technical characteristics exactly repeated the original of 1936.

This approach demonstrates to us that the VW Group and Audi Toolmaking make significant investments in advanced 3D printing technology as a manufacturing technology. The car does not just look chic, but also shows us the prospects of the VW Group and their new developments. We sincerely hope that this car meets environmental standards: D
