French social housing developer Habitat 76 and XtreeE will be building the first 3D-printed student dormitory.

A pilot project will be launched in the canton of Mont-Saint-Aignan, at the University of Rouen. The development of the architectural project and preliminary experiments have been ongoing for about a year. According to the designers, not only buildings will be printed, but also furniture, including tables, chairs and beds. Architectural elements are planned to be implemented using 3D building printing technology according to the XtreeE technique.

XtreeE Construction 3D Printer uses an increasingly popular industrial robot manipulator circuit equipped with an extruder to apply a specially formulated building mixture. According to the authors of the project, a couple of days may be enough to build one small house of the future residential complex. It is planned to bring the 3D-printed object into operation in 2018.

In June of this year, it is planned to complete the construction of an experimental residential studio house equipped with all necessary communications. In case of successful tests, the construction of larger structures will be undertaken. “If we prove the possibility of printing a studio, it will be possible to build three-, four-, five-room apartments, and maybe even entire buildings!” - enthusiastic Sebastian Meteyer, Director of Development, Habitat 76.
