CuteCircuit and the National Graphene Institute at the University of Manchester have created a flickering dress with 3D-printed graphene elements.
The graphene dress is on display at the Trafford Center shopping center, located in Manchester, the city where Andrei Geim and Konstantin Novoselov first synthesized unique material. The dress was made to order to celebrate the award of Manchester with the title of European Science City.
The outfit was developed by CuteCurcuit, a company specializing in wearable electronics. With the help of specialists from the National Institute of Graphene, designers were able to integrate LED backlighting with decorative 3D-printed elements from a graphene composite, which at the same time act as wiring and sensors. The backlight responds to the model’s breathing, changing the color of decorative elements from orange to green or from magenta to turquoise depending on the rhythm and depth of breathing.
