Artist Amao Chen, working in Taiwan, created a toy monkey using a 3D printer to commemorate the New Year on the Chinese calendar.
According to the Chinese lunar-solar calendar, the New Year begins on February 6, 2016 and will be held under the auspices of the Fire Monkey. This holiday is actively celebrated in Asia, including the People's Republic of China, the Republic of Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia. To celebrate the approaching event, Taiwanese Amao Chen, using 3D printing technology, created a toy monkey.
The toy differs from the usual printout in the complexity of its design. The monkey consists of 24 parts, so it can be put in a variety of poses. In addition, the artist paid attention to detail, carefully working on the face and eyes of the toy. Finally, to commemorate the upcoming New Year, the artist placed on his paws the words Bing and Shen, which in Chinese means “Fiery” and “Monkey”, respectively.
Another remarkable feature of the toy is that all its parts are interconnected on complex connecting elements, without the use of glue or hinges. In total, there are 24 joints in it, which symbolize 24 solar seasons in the traditional Chinese lunar-solar calendar. The construction details are made of colored ABS copolymer, so it did not need to be additionally painted. The monkey, created for the New Year, is Chen’s first full-fledged toy printed on a printer.
All the details of the toy are quite mobile - while the monkey does not fall apart at the slightest touch. Users can move her tail and limbs. The toy is well balanced and can be installed on two "paws". A similar effect was achieved after numerous experiments with the density of 3D compounds.
Amao Chen is known on the Internet under the pseudonym PaperCube and specializes in creating cardboard models of pandas, elephants, bears and other animals. He works in his own style, so his figures are easily recognizable by the characteristic cubic eyes. However, recently the artist decided to master the technology of 3D printing. To begin with, he created for the printer models of the Taiwanese black bear and rhino, thus drawing attention to these animals, which are threatened with extinction.
