Etihad Airways, the second largest airline in the United Arab Emirates, will work to improve airliners in collaboration with Siemens AG and Strata Manufacturing PJSC. The objective of the pilot project will be 3D printing of interior trim components. Siemens will provide software support, as well as material selection and testing, while Etihad Airways engineers will prepare the products for certification. Production will be carried out at the Strata Manufacturing factory in Abu Dhabi.
“The main difficulty with using 3D-printed parts in aviation is certification, but we are ready to overcome this problem. Etihad Airways engineering division will channel expertise in designing the first 3D-printed aircraft interior trim parts in UAE history. We will work closely with certification authorities and with Strata to make additive manufacturing of aircraft parts in the UAE a reality, ”said Jeff Wilkinson, CEO of Etihad Airways Engineering.
In the long run, Etihad Airways sees 3D printing technology as a tool for manufacturing complex components as needed, as well as replenishing parts that have been discontinued.
